The Boulder 861 Stereo Power Amplifier distills the company’s decades of high-power, high-precision engineering into a compact, accessible form. Sharing the exact footprint of the 812 DAC Preamplifier, it delivers 50W continuous into 8 ohms with the current reserves to double peak power into 4 ohms and reach 200W peaks into 2-ohm loads, ensuring authoritative control across a wide range of loudspeakers. New protection circuitry allows the amplifier to deliver greater current at maximum output without risking damage to its electronics, preserving composure during demanding passages.
Every circuit board and piece of metalwork is produced in-house at Boulder’s dedicated facility, a level of vertical integration that supports rigorous quality assurance. The fully balanced design, with a 3-pin XLR input, achieves a frequency response of +0.00, -0.04 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and a noise floor of just 2.6 μV, contributing to a notably transparent window into the recording. Boulder’s traditional 0.25-inch thumbscrew binding posts secure speaker cables with the firm contact essential for signal integrity, while IP control and networked HTML page access simplify integration into modern systems. Software updates for the internal control and housekeeping systems are available via automated online downloads or manual USB port installation, keeping the amplifier current with minimal effort.
