Everything that happens before conversion, from fetching a stream off the network to raising a 44.1 kS\/s CD rip to DXD or DSD, happens here. The Upsampler accepts data from any of its inputs and resamples it to 24-bit PCM at any rate from 32 to 384 kS\/s, or to DSD64 or DSD128, with the rule that the output rate must be equal to or higher than the input rate. A choice of anti-alias filters is offered for the twelve most common conversions. Doing this in a separate chassis keeps the processors, network interface and their power supplies away from the Ring DAC's reference and summing stages, and lets the two boxes be updated independently; the Upsampler's streaming board is the part of a dCS system most likely to be revised, and current production, which dCS's price list calls the Upsampler Plus, carries the network platform that runs Mosaic, Roon Ready and the streaming services.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eChris Thomas, reviewing the Upsampler and Master Clock for Hi-Fi+ after living with the Vivaldi DAC on its own, heard the Upsampler bring \"another new dimension of seamlessness to the music\", more room around each instrument and voice, and gains \"from the lowest bass to the highest treble\", ironing out what he called the remaining compressive edges. Michael Fremer's Stereophile review of the full Vivaldi system found soundstaging and imaging that surpassed what he thought digital could do, with a character that held at both very low and very high volume. Which output format sounds best is a matter for the listener and the recording; dCS leaves DXD, DSD and DSDx2 all available, and switching between them from the Mosaic app takes seconds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Upsampler is the Vivaldi system's hub for sources. Ethernet carries Roon Ready, TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify, Deezer, internet radio, UPnP and AirPlay through Mosaic, at 24-bit\/384 kS\/s and DSD128. An asynchronous USB-B input takes the same from a computer or server and a USB-A port plays files from a drive; one AES\/EBU input, two S\/PDIF on RCA, one on BNC and a Toslink input accept transports, CD players, televisions and other digital sources. On the output side there are two single-wire AES outputs (to 192 kS\/s), a Dual AES pair carrying 88.2–384 kS\/s PCM or DSD64\/128 to the Vivaldi DAC, and S\/PDIF on RCA and BNC. Two word clock inputs take the Vivaldi Master Clock's 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz outputs, and a word clock output can run at the output data rate, or 44.1 kHz when outputting DSD, to drive the DAC in a system without a separate clock. There is no volume control; that stays in the DAC.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWithin the dCS range the Upsampler has no counterpart below Vivaldi: Lina, Bartók and Rossini build streaming and upsampling into the DAC, and Varèse moves them into the Core.
