Everything the Vivaldi stack spreads across three chassis lives here on one set of power supplies, which is what makes Rossini the sensible first dCS and the reference against which the bigger systems are measured (the Lina, Bartók and Rossini stacks are compared for a first system on their own page). Jason Victor Serinus wrote in Stereophile that the APEX version "is more than another upgrade; it's a major advance in digital sound reproduction", and John Atkinson's measurements, 0.00026 percent THD+N at full scale and linearity error negligible until below −135 dBFS, led him to call its performance "beyond reproach".

The Rossini Master Clock is the first addition most owners make. A DAC's internal clock has two jobs, running the converter and locking to the source; the Master Clock separates them, generating the 44.1 and 48 kHz references from two separate crystal oscillators in a chassis with nothing else in it, and sending them to the DAC and the Transport over BNC cables. It does not change the Rossini's character; it sharpens the focus of each instrument and holds the recorded acoustic steady. The Rossini Transport reads CD and SACD on a dual-laser mechanism, passes SACD as native DSD and can upsample CD to DXD, DSD or DSDx2 before it leaves the box, encrypted for a dCS DAC over Dual AES. It is the only way to get an SACD collection into a Ring DAC at native resolution.

Rossini is where the dCS sound starts: a very low noise floor, a stable and deep image, natural tone and none of the glare that makes digital tiring. The step up to Vivaldi is not a better converter chip, since both carry the Ring DAC APEX; it is the separation of streaming, upsampling and clocking into their own chassis, and the comparison page explains what that buys and why.
