Rather than buy a module and a switch-mode supply off the shelf, Burmester designed its own class D output sections with custom output filters, assembles them by hand in Berlin, and powers them from a conventional analog supply with a linear transformer, which it credits for the amplifier's warmth and balance. The preamplifier and the headphone amplifier are both DC-coupled, keeping capacitors out of the signal path, and a protection circuit for overload, overheating and DC offset sits outside it. Rated output is 120 W per channel into 4 Ω with a damping factor of 250, a bandwidth of under 10 Hz to 60 kHz at −3 dB and a signal-to-noise ratio above 92 dB. A front-panel Smooth button applies a gentle high-frequency roll-off for harsh recordings or low-level listening. Inputs are three balanced XLR and two RCA; there is a balanced XLR pre-out, a surround throughput that passes a processor's front channels straight to the power stage, bass and treble controls that can be bypassed, a 6.3 mm headphone jack on the front, remote control and a BurLink interface. The speaker terminals are massive binding posts, and Burmester recommends spade lugs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"margin:0 0 12px\"\u003eAlan Sircom reviewed the 101 for Hi-Fi+ and found it hard and flat out of the box, settling over a few days into a warmer sound with real grip on the loudspeaker. He wrote that \"what the 101 does exceptionally well is rebuild the too-often severed link between 'enjoyable' and 'detailed,'\" found the Smooth setting useful on compressed recordings, rated the headphone amplifier highly, and concluded that \"this one's a keeper.\" Tom Martin of The Absolute Sound heard \"a top-to-bottom clarity coupled with very low noise levels\" that separated players on the stage, and a highly dynamic character from bass to treble, while noting that this is a medium-power amplifier not suited to low-sensitivity loudspeakers in a large room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"margin:0 0 12px\"\u003eThe 101 is the simplest way into a Burmester system: a 151 MK2 Musiccenter or a DAC on one XLR input, a turntable through the 100 Phono or an external phono stage on another, and a pair of efficient loudspeakers. The balanced pre-out lets an owner add a 036 or 956 MK2 power amplifier later and keep the 101 as preamplifier. The 232 above it adds a class A\/B output stage, a display and optional DAC-streaming and phono modules; the 032 adds a 650 VA power supply and 170 W per channel into 4 Ω.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"margin:0 0 20px\"\u003eThe 101 belongs to Burmester's Classic Line.
